Behavioural Consultations

Many factors can contribute to the development of behavioural problems. Such problems may develop at any time, not just in puppyhood, but also in well trained older dogs. Preventative behaviour counselling and early intervention will reduce the likelihood of the behaviour becoming intolerable to the point when the pet needs to be re-homed or even destroyed. More dogs and cats are euthanized for behavioural reasons such as aggression, destructiveness and indoor elimination, than for all medical conditions combined.

Although when behavioural problems do develop it can be distressing for the owner, we believe that most behavioural problems can be modified. Sometimes owners assume that a problem is normal canine/feline behaviour and are unaware that help is available from a pet behaviour counsellor.

Whatever your concern, we do not pass judgement but empathise and assess the underlying motivations and provide you with a behaviour modification programme to help resolve your dog's particular problem.

A behavioural consultation is conducted in your home to assess your pet and its relationship with the environment in which it lives. We look at each pet as an individual and the emotions that are driving your dog's inappropriate behaviour.

A behaviour modification programme is devised to include techniques suited to your lifestyle that you will be able to implement to achieve desired behaviour. We provide you with some understanding on how your dog learns and communicates and explain the principles behind the techniques employed.

The behaviour modification programme could potentially be complex and may need to be implemented for an extended period, and it is easy for owners to become discouraged - however, persistence with the programme will be rewarded with appropriate behaviours. It is for this reason that we provide you with extensive telephone support and advice to help you through the programme.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns about your pet.
